Telem

Telem’s Hibuki program is a research-based psychosocial intervention designed to provide rapid and effective psychological support to large populations of children affected by trauma, including war, natural disasters, and medical crises. The program has been evaluated through clinical research conducted in collaboration with Tel Aviv University and Harvard University, demonstrating its effectiveness in reducing distress among children, and is implemented in Israel and internationally in contexts of acute and ongoing distress. The intervention is centered on a specially designed therapeutic doll called “Hibuki” (derived from the Hebrew word for “hug”). The doll is used as a clinical tool within a structured therapeutic process involving parents, caregivers, and educators. Through this process, children are supported in expressing and processing fear and anxiety in a safe, developmentally appropriate, and non-stigmatizing manner. The approach helps strengthen emotional regulation, restore a sense of safety and control, and build resilience. The program serves diverse populations of children across Israel from Jewish, Muslim, Christian, Druze, and Bedouin communities. It supports children experiencing emotional distress due to conflict and disasters, children of displaced families, children of soldiers and reservists, children from bereaved families, and children coping with injury or illness in hospital settings. In addition, an adapted version of the Hibuki model is used to support children with special needs. The program is guided by principles of cultural sensitivity, evidence-based practice, and ongoing clinical and field-based research, with the aim of continuously improving outcomes for children exposed to trauma. To date, the Hibuki program has supported over 150,000 children in Israel and internationally, including deployments following major crises such as the war in Ukraine, earthquakes in Turkey, the tsunami in Japan, as well as large-scale implementation in Israel following October 7th, addressing both acute and prolonged trauma among children.
