Yad Izhak Ben-Zvi was established by a special law of the Knesset in 1969 to commemorate Israel’s second president, Izhak Ben-Zvi. It primarily focuses on the research and dissemination of knowledge relating to Jerusalem, the Land of Israel, and the Jewish communities of the East. Yad Izhak Ben-Zvi publishes a number of books and journals devoted to these areas and also runs educational programs for the students, scholars, and the general public such as lectures, courses, educational tours, and scholarly colloquia. Yad Izhak Ben-Zvi also maintains an educational institution that includes an audio-visual model and presentations of Jerusalem during the First Temple period. Following the events of October 7th, 2023, Yad Ben-Zvi’s Department of Visual History sent out teams to document items and objects salvaged from the communities and houses that were catastrophically attacked and damaged. These objects are carefully photographed and thoroughly documented and registered in the Department’s dedicated software system. They are then stored and will be kept safely until the communities decided how best to use them, whether for purposes of commemoration and remembrance, or any other way they see fit. The documentation and preservation of tangible objects of trauma from October 7th presents a unique way to tell the many stories of that day from new and unexpected perspectives.
