Yad Ezra V’Shulamit was formed in 1988 by Aryeh Lurie to fight hunger and poverty in Israel. Mr. Lurie, who grew up hungry, made it his life’s mission to help needy families feed their children. He named the organization after his parents, who always gave to those less fortunate than themselves despite their own poverty. Yad Ezra V’Shulamit’s goal is to fight food insecurity and restore dignity to families living in poverty in Israel. We strive to ease the suffering of impoverished children, widows, orphans, and families, and to break the cycle of poverty. Today, we aid over 300,000 poverty-stricken individuals. Our projects include after-school centers for impoverished children, where they receive a daily hot lunch, tutoring, therapies, new clothes, coats, school supplies, and a summer camp, providing them with a chance to break out of poverty. We also provide weekly food baskets and food vouchers, support for widows and orphans, baby formula distribution to impoverished mothers, subsidized weddings for needy brides and grooms, support for lone soldiers, a youth center for at-risk Ethiopian children and youth, and emergency assistance in times of war. Yad Ezra V’Shulamit is the largest distributor of food baskets in Israel. Every week, Yad Ezra V’Shulamit distributes 12,000 weekly food baskets and food vouchers, and for Rosh Hashanah and Passover, over 55,000 food baskets to Israel’s neediest families through 93 cities. The food baskets include chicken, fish, rice, noodles, fruits, vegetables, canned goods, milk products, and various other products depending on the in-kind donations received. Beneficiaries include impoverished people such as Holocaust survivors, widows, orphans, single-parent families, families with a disabled parent, the elderly, and new immigrants.
