United Hatzalah is Israel’s only nationwide, fully-volunteer emergency medical service (EMS) and its mission is to save lives, 24/7. Its services are available to all people regardless of race, religion, or nationality, and are completely free of charge. It trains and equips ordinary citizens, who live and work in cities, towns, and rural communities throughout Israel, so they can provide free on-scene medical treatment to anyone in need during the critical window of time between the onset of the crisis and arrival of traditional ambulance assistance. While ambulances are often delayed, United Hatzalah’s network of 7,000 volunteers are always prepared to drop what they are doing to respond to 2,000 emergency calls daily, giving choking, drowning, cardiac arrest, and other victims the best chance of survival. In 2023, United Hatzalah’s volunteers responded to 750,000 emergencies, and 6.2 million since its inception in 2006. With its unique dispatch technology, innovative rapid response vehicles including a fleet of 1,000 innovative Ambucycles which allow volunteers to bypass traffic congestion, roadworks, and narrow streets to reach victims even more swiftly and community-based volunteer network, United Hatzalah’s average response time is under three minutes and as low as 90 seconds in metropolitan areas, making it the fastest EMS in the world. On October 7, 2023, United Hatzalah’s unique EMS model proved to be an indispensable resource during the chaotic first few hours of Hamas onslaught. Its brave volunteers were first on scene saving the lives of hundreds of Israelis. Israel today can be compared to a post-9/11 world. As thoughts turn to the future of post-war Israel, United Hatzalah’s main priority is to ensure a stronger United Hatzalah for a stronger Israel. Its main goals are to expand its network of volunteers in every kibbutz, settlement, and city in Israel, procure additional rapid response vehicles, purchase life-saving medical equipment, provide its volunteers with advanced resiliency training and mass-casualty drills, establish roadside bomb shelters for its volunteer houses, and expand its mass-casualty fleet. Through increasing these lifesaving resources and capacities, United Hatzalah will continue to protect the health and safety of Israel’s citizens year-round and in times of national crises.
