The unique project Into the Light: Celebrating the Rediscovery of the Lost Music of the Nazi Era, created and promoted by Spectacular World of Jewish Music, brings to the stage the music of a very large number of Jewish composers, from all over Europe, who either perished in the Holocaust or fled to exile from Nazi persecution. Their music, which was lost to the world for many years after World War II, has been rediscovered in the past 50 years, a process that continues to the present. The rediscovered music is preserved today in official archives around the world, including in the US (the Shoah Institute at USC, the Fortunoff Archives at Yale University), but very little of it has been performed live up to the present. Into the Light aims at correcting this situation. The first Into the Light concert took place in mid-2022, and our activity has expanded each year since then, culminating most recently in the successful production of Viktor Ullmann’s powerful opera, The Emperor of Atlantis, in December 2025: Ullmann wrote the opera while incarcerated in Theresienstadt and was subsequently murdered at Auschwitz in 1944. Into the Light is honored to have a Group of International Advisors (including several from the US), all experts in the Lost Music of the Nazi Era. The project is supported minimally by Israel’s Ministry of Culture and is well known far beyond the borders of Israel. Our purpose is well-expressed in this quote from the famous German-American composer, Paul Hindemith: Music is meaningful only when it is listened to with attention.
