Soteria is a model of treatment for people with psychosis which was first developed in the United States in the 1970s, and which has been adopted in various places throughout the world. We are introducing this model in Israel. According to the Soteria model, psychosis is best understood and treated not as a biochemical glitch in the brain, but rather an extreme but very human emotional reaction which is best treated with kindness, caring and respect. Unfortunately, this is not always possible in a psychiatric ward. Therefore, in Soteria Israel, we encourage the development of a community alternative to the hospital. In the Soteria setting, we will address the person’s distress in a collaborative and holistic way. The treatment locus will be in a home in the community, conveying an expectation of return to a normal life, with no more than 12 residents living at the home. The atmosphere in the home will be open, supportive, friendly, and caring. The therapeutic backbone of the staff will be comprised of companions, selected on the basis of integrity, enthusiasm, and ability to work with psychotic individuals. Emphasis will be placed upon open and honest communication with the residents, helping them maintain contact with the healthy world around them and promoting their recovery. Medication, if necessary, will be provided only following discussion of treatment options and by mutual consent. Average stay at the home will be one to two months, on par with average psychiatric hospital stays. Our first such home is set to start operating in a beautiful apartment in the center of Jerusalem, on September 1, 2016. This home has the potential to catalyze a change in the way the psychiatrically ill are treated in Israel. One such home, successfully operated, can spur the establishment of many more throughout the country, and challenge hospital wards to rethink their approach to psychosis. Soteria Israel has several functions: 1. Establishing and operating homes, consistent with the Soteria model, for helping people with psychosis 2. Encouraging and guiding others attempting to develop similar treatment settings 3. Cooperation with other groups favoring psychosocial treatment approaches for psychosis 4. Promoting a more humane approach to the treatment of psychosis within the community of mental health practitioners, through articles, conferences, and training programs 5. Expanding the range of options offered in the public mental health system 6. Developing research projects for assessing the short- and long-term effects of the Soteria model
