‘Shamsuna’, the Arab word for “our sun”, is an Israel based NGO that aims to harness the potential of solar energy, and other sustainable off-grid technologies to strengthen and empower the Bedouin community in Israel. Our flagship project, titled “The Sayyid Alharumi initiative” aims to provide means of upward mobility via the construction and maintenance of grid-connected solar fields thereby expanding Israel’s solar capacity and narrowing the gaps between Arabs and Jews. We are also forging pathways to equity in unrecognized villages, starting with the replacement of harmful diesel generators, the installation of local water treatment centers, and streamlining the process of providing closed-circuit infrastructure for use on government institutions. We believe that by forging relationships with the private sector, government, our fellow NGO’s, and representatives of the Bedouin community, we can propose and implement solutions for the broader benefit of all. In acting upon the stated missions above, we deploy a hybrid model of climate mitigation and adaptation practices, in the spirit of a “just transition”. The initiative is part of President Herzog’s “Climate Forum” and operates under the auspices of Life and Environment- the umbrella NGO for the environmental movement in Israel. The initiative was designed under the leadership and guidance of the late MK Sayyid Al-harumi. Following his sudden passing- carries his name.
