Re’em – The Association for the Senior Citizens of the Menashe Region has served the older residents of the Menashe Regional Council, near Hadera in the southern Haifa District, since 1989. In 1993 we opened the “Milo” Educational-Social Center, later joined by centers in Meiser and Katzir, and today we are a home to some 1,800 seniors — Jews and Arabs, kibbutz and community-settlement members, Holocaust survivors and immigrants from the former Soviet Union, religious and secular alike. Our Center runs more than 80 enrichment and educational activities a year, among them exercise classes, art, music, drama, language courses, archaeology, chess, sculpture, heritage trips, photography, computers, culture and lectures, as well as the GaitBetter programme, which uses virtual-reality motor-cognitive training to improve mobility and reduce fall risk. Our “supportive community” programme, run with the Ministry of Welfare and Social Services, serves over 200 households of seniors who wish to remain in their own homes, providing emergency call buttons, a coordinator in regular contact, help with minor repairs and medical appointments, and home-based activities. Since 2014 our Life Stories Documentation Project has trained volunteers to interview seniors and Holocaust survivors and publish their life stories as personal books — 48 to date, presented at a community event under the auspices of the Head of the Regional Council. We work closely with the schools of the Regional Council, more than 60 volunteers accompany our programming and visit isolated seniors at home, and we devote substantial resources to helping older residents — and Holocaust survivors in particular — claim the benefits due to them. Donations support our enrichment programming, the gardening project, the Life Stories Documentation Project, home-based services for isolated seniors, and the day-to-day operation of our centers.
