Rashbi Synagogue of Zichron Yaakov

The Rashbi Synagogue of Zichron Yaakov was established in the Neve Sharett neighbourhood in 1966 to serve the local Iraqi immigrants. The location was originally the transition camp where the immigrants arrived in 1951. Many of the residents were exiles from Iraq, Morocco, and Iran who lived in makeshift tents until they moved to permanent buildings. In the early days the Iraqi community prayed in a tent until they moved into the above-named building where they continue to pray. Originally a synagogue, it had plans to establish a Beit Midrash for religious studies. The community has experienced a renaissance with the local gentrification and growth of the city of Zichron Yaakov itself. With that growth the synagogue has also been recently renovated and expanded. With the support of the Iraqi community of Singapore and Australia, the Iraqi/Syrian/Moroccan community of New York and Los Angeles and London, renovations, and expansion of the existing building have been completed. The Rashbi Synagogue also received a donation of Iraqi-themed Judaica Art produced by the Israeli sculptor Oded Halahmy. Tourists are flocking to Zichron to visit wineries and Ramat Hanadiv, the Rothschild Garden. This collection is quickly becoming a tourist stop Due to the many requests to help the war effort in which the State of Israel is engaged The Synagogue Association for Iraqi Immigrants named Rashbi Expanded the association’s mission to aid the IDF and civilians affected by the war situation in Israel.
