One in Nine – Women for Women with Cancer was established in 1994 by a number of Israeli women who had survived breast cancer. It is a support network comprised of women and professionals who provide legal, emotional, and medical assistance, which enables breast cancer patients to overcome feelings of shame or embarrassment that often accompany this illness. There is a mentoring program (survivors mentor patients with breast cancer), support groups, counseling, and therapy, One in Nine also raises public awareness about breast cancer and promotes breast health in Israel by initiating national campaigns and sponsoring early detection workshops. In addition, the organization provides legal assistance and advocacy services by promoting policies that protect patients’ rights and the rights of their families.
