Meshi Children’s Rehabilitation Center is one of Israel’s leading health care institutions. Founded in 1998 in Jerusalem, Meshi has developed into a model of excellence and professionalism in intensive rehabilitative care for children with severe neurological and muscular disorders, providing them with the tools they need to function and live independent lives. At Meshi, children who were never expected to be able to talk or walk learn to do just that. Meshi is at the international forefront of rehabilitative innovations, applying breakthrough treatment methods and cutting edge equipment. It is the only institution of its kind providing children with a full range of treatments under one roof, and has received numerous awards from the Israeli government recognizing its exemplary services. Since its founding, thousands of children with serious disabilities have significantly benefited from its comprehensive care. The children at Meshi were either born with a neurological disorder such as cerebral palsy, spina bifida, and a wide variety of genetic syndromes, or developed a muscle or nervous system disorder as a result of a disabling illness or injury. There are 250 children at Meshi’s 4 locations, with ages ranging from 8 months to 21 years old. Meshi is one of the only centers in the country to provide such services for children under 3. Meshi relies on the generosity of its donors to support its extensive therapeutic and educational programs. Our current operation budget is approximately $10.2 million dollars. Meshi receives governmental funds as well as limited parental contributions. Having a special needs child is demanding both economically and emotionally; even minimal tuition can be a hardship to our Meshi families. We must raise approximately $2 million dollars annually to maintain our general operations. The pandemic has been very difficult for our already tight budget. Meshi does not turn children away due to financial hardship.
