The Memorial Museum of Hungarian Speaking Jewry (HJM) was established in 1987 in the historic town of Safed (Tsfat). The museum is in possession of one of the richest and most diverse collections of items and artifacts that put on display the history of this community. From the day it was founded, HJM has been functioning as a primary resource for documentation and commemoration of the communities that once inhabited great portions of Hungary, Transylvania, Subcarpatia, Slovakia, Burgenland in Austria and some regions of former Yugoslavia. Extensive information has been collected on the life of these communities, as well as on the dramatic circumstances of their extinction during the Holocaust. Schoolchildren, students from Israel and abroad and tourists of all ages frequently visit the museum. HJM holds conferences on topics related to its main subject matters. Its archive is open to scholars and researchers who may be assisted by a very friendly and helpful staff.
