Meitarim Lachish

The Meitarim Lachish Mechina was founded in 2007 by a group that identified in the Israeli society a lack of deep cultural discourse, a lack of dealing with identity issues, division and polarization between sectors, and a decrease in motivation for social activity and contribution to the state. We propose a program that deepens the personal and national identity of young people, creates a deep discourse, bridges the gaps in society, and provides tools for cultural and educational activities and for the world. -We will always create a deep discourse centered on Jewish, Zionist and Israeli identity. -We will always integrate religious and secular, boys and girls, young people from strong background and young populations from economic and social peripheries, immigrants and veterans. -We will always be involved in the communities that surround us. -We will always educate to meaningful military service and to life as a mission. -We will always be a warm and welcoming home for our students and every guest. On the basis of these guidelines, we offer young high school graduates, to postpone military service, and to attend a one-year educational program in the Lachish region and Gaza border areas. The educational program consists of several components: Academic study – an in-depth study of the core issues of Judaism, Zionism, Israeli society and general philosophy. Creating a connection to the culture of the Jewish people in the past as a basis for recognizing the challenges of the present, identifying with the spirit of the ancestors and encouraging the commitment to continuity. Community activity – weekly activity and peak events at the education and welfare centers. -The study tour – educational tours and field serieses throughout the country, a meeting with various cultural groups in Israel, with contemporary issues and the creation of connection to landscapes and nature. -Preparing for the IDF – physical and mental preparation for service and dealing with dilemmas that arise during service. -Group life and self-management – learning about living together, fostering a sense of respect and belonging to the other, creating bridges of understanding, dialogue and trust. Acquiring skills and initiative as part of a group, while maintaining seriousness, taking responsibility, practicality and mutual assistance. -Creative workshops – writing, film, theater and art workshops. The program has a large number of graduates. These graduates are thoughtful and responsible people with a value discourse and a practical commitment to reform Israeli society. The graduates take part in many national missions, many of them have reached positions of command and officer in the army, and after their discharge from the IDF are integrated into influential places in Israeli society – in local and national government, in the settlement movements, in the economic system, in the academia and the media. Many graduates work in education, engage in social activism and in the development of the third sector, and in practice they change society’s conduct, discourse, and social cohesion. In doing so, they contribute to the transformation of Israeli society into that exemplary society on which we all dream, and for which we established the Mechina. The Lachish Mechina is a body controlled by the Ministry of Defense and the Ministry of Education, and meets all the standards required by the state and tax authorities.
