Lahav for the Elderly in Givatayim has cared for the senior residents of Givatayim since 1983. Givatayim is a small city next to Tel Aviv whose residents are intimate with one another, and at Lahav we provide services to people we have known since we were small children — more than a job and a service, it is taking care of family. We run two day centers. One is a closed and secure center for members living with Alzheimer’s disease, dementia and other cognitive and mental deterioration; the other, on HaHistadrut Street, serves seniors coping with the physical decline of old age in an open framework. Members are collected from their homes each morning by our own accessible buses and receive breakfast and a hot, nutritious lunch, a social worker, nursing care, physiotherapy and occupational therapy, exercise, computers, handicrafts, lectures and social events often shared with local schools, as well as hairdressing, manicure and pedicure and help with bathing for those who cannot manage at home. We also run two Supportive Community frameworks, in north and south Givatayim, serving some 440 households — mainly seniors living alone, including Holocaust survivors — twenty-four hours a day: a 24-hour ambulance service and a doctor on call with an emergency button for every member, handymen and volunteers for household repairs, errands and shopping, and a full program of trips, parties, lectures and enrichment classes that relieve loneliness. Most of those who staff the supportive communities are volunteers, and our organization is managed by a volunteer board. Donations support our two-day centers and two supportive communities, the enlargement and equipping of our physiotherapy room and a new adaptive gym for the elderly, meals, transportation, social and enrichment activities and the upkeep of our facilities for the senior citizens of Givatayim.
