Since 2007, Koach LaOvdim (Power to the Workers) has been pioneering a democratic approach to labor organizing in Israel, bringing together workers across deep social divides in ways previously thought impossible. This young and ideological trade union has achieved remarkable success in uniting Jewish and Arab workers, religious and secular communities, and people from diverse socioeconomic backgrounds around their shared interests of justice, equality and workplace rights. This led to significant achievements in generating effective campaigns against policy and in improving economic stability amongst vulnerable communities, which have not exercised their collective power beforehand. As of January 2025, Koach La Ovdim have 18,600 members and represent approximately 30,000 employees across various economic sectors, including daycare workers, bus drivers, college lecturers, teachers for youth at risk, counsellors, social workers employed by privatized social services, and municipal organization employees in the food industry and more. Koach LaOvdim is unique in its ability to foster genuine solidarity, collaborative decision-making and collective action among groups that rarely interact elsewhere from Orthodox Jewish daycare workers in Bnei Brak to Palestinian bus drivers in East Jerusalem, and from progressive NGO employees to contract workers in privatized social services.
