The Nibras (“Lantern”) Center was established in 2018 at Kaye Academic College of Education. It operates as part of the B.Ed. program in Early Childhood Education for the Arab-Bedouin society. Nibras promotes literacy, language enrichment and a love of reading among children from birth to age 8 in Arab society in the Negev. It trains and mentors students, early childhood educators and parents, and makes a rich collection of high-quality Arabic children’s books available to them. Its work is tailored to the culture and needs of the local communities. Two flagship programs are at the heart of its activities: Story Theater at Nibras Story Theater at Nibras includes two professional development courses for Arab-Bedouin kindergarten teachers, supported by the Israeli Ministry of Education. Teachers learn to bring children’s literature to life through theatrical storytelling. Through theater games, public speaking and the creation of an original performance, they gain practical tools that build children’s language, confidence and emotional expression, and help create a warm, inclusive classroom climate. Graduates extend the program’s reach by leading parent-child sessions in more kindergartens. Hikayat Bidayat: Early Reading in Daycare Centers This program brings dialogic reading to daycare centers in Arab-Bedouin communities in the Negev. Each week, trained students lead book-based sessions for toddlers aged 2–3, working alongside daycare staff. Parents and caregivers learn how to create warm, responsive interactions around books, and each center receives new books for its library. The program runs in partnership with the Bidayat Center at Al-Qasemi Academic College and lays strong language and emotional foundations during the most critical years of development.
