The Association Asperger, Israel (Effie), a registered non-profit organization, was established in March 2001 by parents of children diagnosed as having Asperger Syndrome for the purpose of promoting the welfare and advancing the interests of those with Asperger Syndrome. Asperger Syndrome was defined as a distinct syndrome only in the nineteen- nineties. For this reason many of those afflicted have not yet been diagnosed, or have been diagnosed incorrectly, and appropriate methods of treatment have still not been developed. According to the latest findings, about 0.07% of the population suffer from this syndrome so that there is reason to assume that in the State of Israel their number could comprise about 6,000 people. Effie has today more than 300 families as registered members and their number is growing from day to day. The Association is run by an executive committee and all its activists and officers are working as volunteers.
