Since the 1950s, Ofakim has remained at the bottom of Israel’s educational, socioeconomic, and other rankings. Ofakim has endured rockets from the Gaza Strip since 2011. However, being more than 15 kilometers from the border, it is not entitled to public services and budgets that the Israeli government provides to communities near the Gaza Strip. Community Resilience Ofakim is an independent grassroots organization was established to help Ofakim residents cope with stress and uncertainty due to these attacks, after the first missile shot at the city and the lack of an adequate municipal or government response. Our working model acknowledges the close connection between emergency and community resilience. In emergencies, we provide immediate responses to affected residents’ needs, emphasizing victims of anxiety and trauma. The response includes immediate and long-term active outreach, practical assistance with basic needs, emotional support for victims, help coping with anxiety, caring for children, etc. In our routine, we are engaged in establishing and training teams of youth and adults for emergency response and in social and community activism that helps residents develop personal and community resources, knowledge, abilities, and volunteer manpower, organized in an effective organizational and community system. Although we regularly cooperate with the municipality, we do not receive government or municipality funding and operate only through volunteers and donations.
