B’Ruach Spiritual Care and Training

Many hospital patients and their family members experience feelings of spiritual loneliness and despair during a severe illness. It is imperative to create an atmosphere of spiritual support for the benefit of the sick and their families and for the staff who care for them. Bikkur Holim, the mitzvah of visiting the sick is left mostly to family members and friends who themselves often in need of support. Research and experience show that the provision of pastoral care contributes to a process of creating meaning, hope and self-dignity when facing a life-threatening illness. Beruach (Byspirit, 2005) is a pioneering non-profit initiative, devoted to introducing spiritual care into Israeli health institutions. Beruach is a unique service benefiting patients and their families. Our teams strive towards lessening staff compassion-fatigue, collaborating as an integral part of interdisciplinary medical teams. Beruach is lead by a professional spiritual care staff and Prof. Nathan Cherny, director of the palliative care unit at the Oncology department at Shaare Zedek Medical Center (SZMC). SZMC has been Beruach?s longstanding host institution and partner.Through the tireless efforts of its tiny, devoted staff, Beruach has achieved important milestones during its 14 years. Our four areas of work are (a) direct spiritual care, (b) training program, (c) a placement program for our alumni and (d) our alumni network program. Our work: direct spiritual care in hospitals and geriatric/nursing facilities as part of ongoing integral health care, free of charge to patients and their families. During 2017, Beruach staff spiritually accompanied over 350 patients during more than 1400 sessions, including family members and caretakers, at SZMC’s Oncology department alone.
