Bshvil Hamachar (Bshvil) is an Israeli non-profit organization established in 2009 to relieve Israel Defense Forces (IDF) combat veterans of the acute emotional and psychological effects of combat-related trauma. Bshvil’s mission is to help these men and women return to a stable life through the organization’s uniquely executed model: group activities set in nature, facilitated by top-notch psychologists and counselors to facilitate the processing of their combat experiences. The groups average 15 veterans between the ages of 22- 40, as well as support for their families so they have the tools to help when the veterans return home. The main part of the program, the journey, is an eight-day journey set in nature, with pre-and post-journey meetings. There is also a shorter, three-day retreat for some groups needing immediate psychological support. The methodology is continuously enhanced through academic research conducted at the University of Haifa. The university shows extremely positive results for the over 4,000 combat veterans who went through the program and were tested. Participants report a rejuvenated sense of well-being, increased resilience, and enhanced social capabilities and everyday functioning. This includes successful return to productive work, building lasting relationships, improved family relations, and more. Bshvil estimates that among the approximately 300,000 reservists, around 35% display at least partial PTSD symptoms, with approximately 35,000 of these from combat units, the organization’s target. Bshvil has a productive collaboration with the Ministry of Defense and the IDF’s Mental Health Department.
