The Benji Hillman Foundation was established in 2006 in memory of Major Benji Hillman, a company commander in the elite Egoz unit of the Golani regiment killed in action at the beginning of the Second Lebanon War, less than a month after his wedding. At the shiva, Benji?s family and close friends heard from many people (especially the soldiers under his command, in particular lone soldiers) how Benji had helped them and taken care of them, above and beyond the line of duty, and decided to honor his memory and establish a Home and Guidance Center for lone combat soldiers in the IDF. HaBayit shel Benji provides 87 lone soldiers serving in combat units with everything they need during their military service – the highest level of material supports (private rooms, 3 meals a day, washing, large public areas etc) and a supportive family shell. Every soldier enjoys warmth, an attentive ear, an active social life, and is an integral part of the warm family community of HaBayit shel Benji. HaBayit shel Benji’s Guidance Center supports all lone soldiers after their discharge from the IDF, helping them start their first step towards civilian life successfully and to integrate them into the Israeli society optimally as independent and productive citizens. Staffed by a professional Director, a Mentor Coordinator (each soldier has their own mentor as we believe in a 1 on 1 approach), Grants and Scholarships Coordinator and dedicated volunteers, the Guidance Center provides guidance on vocation, education and housing, to these highly motivated young people after their discharge from IDF service. HaBayit shel Benji is unique in the Israeli landscape, and, since its establishment, has constantly been praised by all Israeli leading organizations including the army ? and has been called the best housing and guidance program for lone soldiers in Israel. HaBayit shel Benji receives no government or public funding of any kind, and relies on donations and volunteers to provide its vital service.
