Beit Z’keinim U’Zkeinot — the General Home for Elderly Men and Women of the Jewish Community of Jerusalem — has cared for the city’s elderly since 1905, when it opened on Jaffa Road opposite Shaare Zedek Hospital. Since 1984 it has occupied a purpose-built home in the Kiryat Menachem neighbourhood, where every room looks out over the Judean Hills. Licensed and supervised by the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Welfare, the home cares for 119 residents across three departments — 54 independent living units, a 29-bed department for the frail and a 36-bed nursing department led by a specialist geriatrician — and runs a day center on the ground floor for seniors who live in the community. Residents are looked after by geriatric physicians, nurses on duty around the clock, carers, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, dieticians and social workers, and receive three meals and two snacks a day from the home’s own kosher kitchen. Life in the house is deliberately full: age-adapted exercise, art and craft, music, cooking, jewellery making, a writing workshop, therapeutic gardening, animals, a computer room with touch-screen stations and a life-story group, outings, festival meals and ceremonies, and an active synagogue with a regular minyan and Torah classes that is open to the whole neighbourhood. Twenty local families take part in our ‘Adopt a Senior’ program, kindergarten children visit every month, and National Service volunteers and youth movements are here throughout the year. The home is also a clinical training site for occupational therapists, social workers and gerontology students. Donations support the upkeep and improvement of the building and its equipment — furniture and medical equipment for the frail elderly department, safe stairwells, the communal dining room and lounge, an exercise and physiotherapy centre, and the renovation of the kitchen — and help us care for elderly Jerusalemites who cannot afford to pay.
