The Association for the Elderly – Eilat has served the senior citizens of Eilat since 1980, when it began as an afternoon social club for ages 60 and over. In 1989 we opened our Day Care Center, together with a treatment center for adults with physical and mental disabilities and a seniors’ workshop, and we have been expanding ever since. We are the only social service organization in Eilat providing programming geared specifically to elderly people with physical and mental limitations. Our Day Center, for ages 70–95, provides nutritious breakfasts and lunches cooked on the premises with attention to special dietary needs, door-to-door transportation including for those who are wheelchair-bound, physical, occupational and speech therapy, social workers for personal support, home visits and help with bureaucracy, a registered nurse, a fully equipped exercise room, a swimming pool opened in 2018, and a wide range of activities — arts and ceramics, jewelry making, drawing, flower arrangement, computer skills, music, a library and a beauty parlor. Our 60+ Club offers bridge, stained glass and other crafts, Pilates and Feldenkrais, family workshops across four generations, birthday parties, kabbalat shabbat with dinner and holiday-eve cultural events, and we run a club for adults with disabilities aged 21 to 67. We organize theater, trips, vacations and the annual “Senior Week” together with the other senior clubs of the community center. For seniors in their own homes we repair desert coolers, fit peepholes and make small repairs through our volunteer handymen, distribute furniture and clothing to those in need, provide 24-hour security and supervision through Yad Sarah’s “Help Needed” service, and help obtain urgent medical care for a nominal fee. Donations support the heating and enclosure of our therapy pool, the replacement of our wheelchair-accessible van, a sensory integration room, meals, transportation and the upkeep of our facility for the senior citizens of Eilat.
