Arava Institute for Environmental Studies

The motto of the Arav Institute is “Nature knows no borders” while the Institute’s focus is on educating the next generation of leaders in the Middle East to be sensitive to the environment many other activities have had a more immediate impact. The Rare Trees Association’s activities have saved rare and endangered species of trees and plants, placed them in botanical gardens and on reserves and have allowed for the possibility that the species may someday returned to their native ranges. The shelter garden founded by the RTA and now sponsored by the SPNI has become a center for researching the perennial desert species of the Middle Eastern deserts and a sponser for similar projects in Jordan and Morocco The RTA seedbank at the AIES contains and keeps safe the seeds of many wild, indigenous and rare species. The grant money was awarded to further these activities, most notably work with a very rare and endangered Boswellia species with a dangerously low germination rate.
