Amutat Kaima

Kaima is a network of non-profit educational farms established to improve opportunities for young Israelis (ages 15-21) challenged to relate to conventional educational/social settings and bring together the larger community in the process. We engage those who have dropped out of school, as well as people suffering addiction, sexual abuse, and dangerously poor self-esteem, among other challenges. Tapping into the healing power of nature and utilizing employment as an educational tool, Kaima successfully changes the downward trajectory of their lives. Participants earn a salary, develop critical life-skills, and secure a sense of purpose. To date, we have provided full-time employment to more than 800 young people, 80% of whom return to normative school settings within six months; engaged ~9,000 visitors in short-term eco-educational programming; and maintain a weekly customer base of ~550. Now in our second decade of operations, we have helped establish eight educational farms in Israel, and one in Tanzania. While most Kaima farms engage youth who have left the school system and young adult adults challenged to integrate into conventional National Service programming, our social farming model has also been applied to other special populations, including girls and women recovering from sexual abuse, demobilized soldiers dealing with PTSD, and special needs adults, among others.
