Amit – the Association for the Welfare of the Elderly in Ness Ziona has served the town’s senior citizens since 1986, when it was founded at the initiative of the municipality and its senior residents. From our own building we run a Day Center combining social, cultural, religious, educational and health programming, including a separate sheltered unit for people living with Alzheimer’s disease and dementia and a relaxing snoezelen room. Members receive a dietician-supervised breakfast and lunch, individual support from a full-time social worker, nursing care and health lectures, physiotherapy, acupuncture, massage and aromatherapy, showering and laundry services, barber and hairdressing services, and door-to-door transportation by experienced and empathetic drivers. Our programs include arts and crafts, ceramics, drawing, knitting, sewing and baking, music and movement therapy, gardening, a community theatre, mind-challenging computer games, holiday and birthday celebrations, day and weekend trips, and a joint choir of seniors and elementary school children. We also serve seniors who cannot leave their homes, providing light repairs and maintenance, installation of safety equipment, a convenient shopping bazaar and regular volunteer and student visits, and we run dedicated programming for our Holocaust survivors. A personal set of goals is designed for every participant, and close to 190 volunteers work alongside our professional staff. Donations support recreational trips, inter-generational and enrichment programming, activities for Holocaust survivors, meals, transportation and the upkeep of our facility for the senior citizens of Ness Ziona.
