Established in 2017, the mission of Al-Baqour is to promote early childhood development among Bedouin children in the Negev – the most impoverished and marginalized population in Israel. Bedouin children face many social determinants that jeopardize their access to developmental foundations, including poverty, low parental education, and insufficient childcare services. From birth to age 3, during the most active period of human brain growth and development, they are almost entirely without access to early childhood education programs resulting in achievement gaps and long-term disadvantages. During these formative early years, young children’s experiences, particularly the interactions they have with their caregivers, build their brains, and strengthen their cognitive, social, and emotional development. Our programs enrich educational and family experiences in an effort to reduce achievement gaps in early childhood and increase school readiness. This will positively affect children’s future life course development. Al-Baqour strengthens early childhood support in Bedouin towns and unrecognized villages through the following activities: My First Library; Traveling Library and Outdoor Read-Alouds; My Child and I; Non-Degree Trainings for Bedouin Women in Early Childhood Development.
