AKIM – Jerusalem, Association for Rehabilitation of Persons with Mental Disabilities was founded in 1951 and provides two main kinds of services. The first is “in-the-community” housing for people with mental disabilities and other developmental disorders of all ages and functioning. The clients are referred to AKIM-Jerusalem by local and regional welfare agencies and the large majority of them originate from below average, low-income families. Secondly, AKIM-Jerusalem provides support to families who continue to care for their children with disabilities at home, rather than encouraging their institutionalization. This includes a Respite Care program, Home Care support, and extended school day programs.
