The Association of Jewish Academics from the Former Soviet Union (SHAMIR) was founded in 1971. Its main goals were: to produce Jewish reading and study material in modern Russian, to organize Russian-language lectures classes, and seminars with Jewish content, and to provide assistance to Russian immigrants in finding homes, schooling, and work. SHAMIR was, and is, a self-help organization, with veteran Russian immigrants helping out the new comers. When the Soviet Union started to collapse, SHAMIR expanded its activities to include: the development of Jewish educational activities in Israel and the FSU, the printing of Jewish-content books in Israel and the FSU, and a concerned effort to help immigrant professionals from the FSU to find suitable employment in Israel.
